Apollonia was founded by Greek colonists as the harbor for inland Cyrene, just 20 km away. Over centuries, it became a powerful city in its own right and, by the 6th century CE, the capital of Roman Libya Superior (Libya Pentapolis).

The site is famous for its Greek theater, perched on the edge of the Mediterranean with breathtaking views, and for its underwater ruins, a result of catastrophic earthquakes such as the Crete quake of 365 CE that submerged much of the harbor. These submerged structures make Apollonia one of the most unique archaeological sites in North Africa.

Visitors can also explore the Palace of the Dux, a sprawling Byzantine-era complex with over 100 rooms, as well as grand churches, fortifications, and ancient streets. For history enthusiasts, Apollonia offers an extraordinary look at how natural forces shaped human settlements.
