An architectural wonder, this perfectly round granary fortress showcases Amazigh community design and early cooperative ingenuity.

Built in the 13th century CE by ‘Abdallah Abu Jatla, Gasr al-Hajj is a stunning example of Amazigh communal architecture. This circular ksar (fortified granary) was designed to store grain, olive oil, and valuables for local families, functioning much like an ancient bank.

The structure’s perfect symmetry and honeycomb-like cells are breathtaking, especially when sunlight filters through its central courtyard. With 119 chambers, each marked for a specific family, the ksar reflects centuries of cooperation and survival in Libya’s harsh environment.

Today, Gasr al-Hajj is a photographer’s dream and a living connection to the region’s Berber past.
