Exploring Cyrene
Cyrene, a UNESCO-listed treasure of Greek and Roman history, is set amid lush mountains and rolling hills.
Cyrene was an ancient Greek colony and later a Roman city near modern-day Shahat. Founded in the 7th century BCE by settlers from Thera (Santorini), it became one of the Mediterranean’s most important centers of philosophy and culture.
Known as the “Athens of Africa,” Cyrene was home to the Cyrenaics school of philosophy and grew rich through trade in horses and the medicinal plant silphium. Under Roman rule, it boasted monumental temples, theaters, and public spaces.
The Temple of Zeus, one of the largest in the Greek world, still dominates the site alongside the Sanctuary of Apollo and grand colonnaded streets. Devastating earthquakes in 262 and 365 CE damaged the city, but its remains today are remarkably preserved, offering visitors a glimpse into classical grandeur.

Located in northeastern Libya’s Green Mountain region, near the modern town of Shahat, about 150 km east of Benghazi.
